Summer Solstice

Celebrating summer solstice today, the longest day of the year. The longest chilly, grey, dreary, gloomy day of the year.

Don't get me wrong. I love living in a place where it starts to get light at 4:30 in the morning this time of year, and isn't really dark until almost 10 at night. I love living in a place that's green all year round, and ferns grow wild. I realize that the flipside of these things is that you get about 15 minutes of daylight in the dead of winter, and it rains a lot. I realize there is a price to be paid. But really, even in Seattle, by mid-June a glimpse of blue sky at some point during the day ought not be a remarkable occurrence. This year, it is. A friend referred to it as June-uary.

So, today is the first day of summer. I'm ready.

  1. June-uary. Perfect! I'm still wearing fleece.

This is a La Nina weather pattern - cool through the Summer and I think we're in for more snow next Winter. How I yearn for the last two El Nino years that were warmer than usual. Lovely, lovely sunshine that lifted my spirits even as it caused me to wear my cooling vest. It seems that it is easier for me to cool down than to warm up!

Ans yes, I do love that everything stays lush and green in our corner of the States.

  3. Good word. I have always loved the lush and green of Seattle area. I love Puget Sound especially.

It is still cooler that normal here. Clouds in Summer - very La Nina I suppose. But I do not remember anything like this years weather umm ...
