Dancing the Sun Up

Obligatory May Day post, because it's May Day.

Or maybe because it's Beltaine. Or maybe because it's halfway between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice. Or maybe just because it's not raining today. At least it's not raining here. Right now.

Whatever.

Somebody must've danced the sun up, and done a fine job of it, because there it is.

  1. Yes, happy May Day! As a kid we'd put flowers on people's porches, ring the bell and run. It was quite a while before I learned about the Beltaine and Labor aspects of this day.

So, in your former life as a clogger did you do any Morris dancing? I remember watching some folks in costume practice at Gas Works Park what I thought was some form of English folk dancing. Was very.

    1. Guilty as charged. I danced with Greenwood Morris when I lived in Lansing, Michigan, and I can tell you that at dawn on May Day in Michigan, it can be pretty darned cold! Still have my kit. You never know. Might need it sometime.

A woman who danced with us was from Bristol, and used to dance with Rag Morris (the side in the video). She taught us a couple of dances from the Upton on Severn tradition. They're still my favorites.
